Who we serve · Banks

Dormant account holder tracing for banks.

About R7.3 billion sits in South African bank accounts whose holders have not been heard from past the dormancy thresholds. xverified traces and verifies the account holder, or the executor and heirs where the holder has died, so the bank can re-engage lawfully under FICA and POPIA, with an audit trail per account.

01The problem

The customer moved. Or died. The balance stayed.

Dormancy is rarely a decision. The customer changed jobs and banks, the mobile number on file is no longer theirs, the address was a rented room, or the customer has died and the family never knew the account existed. The bank’s KYC record is a snapshot of the day the account was opened, and the longer the account sleeps the less of it is still true.

Reactivating or paying out a dormant balance to the wrong person is a FICA and a fraud problem, so banks need the holder verified, not just found.

02How we trace

From the account record to a verified holder.

  1. 01

    Resolve the holder

The account's KYC data is resolved against the 14 sources and verified with Home Affairs. Deceased holders are confirmed against the death register and the Master's Office.
  2. 02

    Trace current contact details

Address, phone and employer from credit bureau and enrichment footprints, with the recency of each.
  3. 03

    Verify in person where needed

Field tracers confirm identity against certified documents, obtain consent and complete the bank's reactivation or claim forms, under the bank's script.
  4. 04

    Return the pack

Verified holder or estate representative, documents, and the dated journal, keyed on the account number for the bank's dormancy process.
03What the bank receives

Verification the RMCP can accept.

Verified holder
Home Affairs-confirmed identity, certified ID copy, current contact details.
Deceased holders
Death confirmation, estate reference, executor's appointment or the verified heirs.
Consent and forms
Signed consent and the bank's own reactivation or claim forms, completed.
Journal
Dated record of every step per account, for the dormancy register and the auditors.
Exceptions
Accounts whose holders could not be found, with the steps taken.

Fees are charged only on holders verified to the agreed standard. Where the bank only needs current contact details for known customers, contact details tracing is priced per record. See pricing.

Questions

Bank questions

What counts as a dormant account?

An account with no customer-initiated activity for the period set in the bank's own dormancy policy and the applicable industry rules. Dormant balances remain the customer's money, and the bank remains responsible for returning it to the right person when they or their heirs are found.

How does FICA affect re-engagement?

Before a dormant account is reactivated or a balance paid out, the bank must be satisfied of the customer's identity under its Risk Management and Compliance Programme. The verification we return, Home Affairs-confirmed identity with certified documents, is built to slot into that process.

What about deceased account holders?

A large share of long-dormant accounts belong to people who have died. We confirm the death with Home Affairs, locate the estate at the Master's Office and identify the executor or, where no estate was reported, the heirs, so the bank can pay the right party.

Does this cover credit balances and unclaimed refunds?

Yes. Credit balances on closed accounts, unclaimed refunds and unallocated deposits are traced the same way, from the bank's record to a verified person.

Can xverified contact the customer on the bank's behalf?

Field tracers can, under the bank's script and consent process, but the account itself is reactivated and the balance paid only by the bank on its own systems. xverified never handles customer money.
